I think Crispin's religion and his class affected his characterization. Since Crispin is a peasant, he is always told what to do and must follow others orders his whole life. Crispin remembers how not following his orders would result in a harsh penalty such as "whippings" or "a clipping of the ear" (Staples 4).When Crispin gets a bounty put on him he must choose his own path and what he will do next. This situation shows how Crispin is dependent on others, as he is not confident in making his own decisions. As well as this, Crispin is very afraid of the world beyond Stromford, as he is scared to know what lies beyond his village. Crispin has lived in the same place for his whole life and is unaware of what other places exist outside of Stromford. I think this shows his character is a dependent, and afraid person who is unsure what path to take next. Crispin's religion also plays a large role in his life. When Crispin is beginning his journey he believes that God is giving him signs that are helping to guide him. "Knowing how wondrous are the works of God, I thought perhaps He-in his awful mercy-was speaking to me with his dreadful vision. For I knew that, from that moment on, I was resolved to stay alive"(Staples 65). This relates to his dependent nature, as he is always looking for somebody else's direction as to what he will do next. When Crispin is lost he resorts to prayer, hopping that he will be guided along in the right direction, he doesn't, however, choose his own path according to what he thinks is right.
Mrs. Lewis, you make a really good point about the way that Crispin was always told what to do, which caused him to become dependent on other people for everything in his life.
