    1. I read the book From Hardships To Championships by Glenn Stout. This book was very good and it is a very good book if you like reading about your favorite baseball players and their histories and childhoods. The book was about famous baseball players who had very rough pasts or childhoods and they persevered and made good choices to grow up and have a very successful life and have a good career as a baseball player. The main part of the story was about Babe Ruth. Babe Ruth grew up in a big family with many siblings and he went to a catholic school called St. Mary's. Since there were so much kids in his family he didn't get much attention from his family and so his childhood was not very good, but when he started playing baseball for his school it turned his life around. He loved playing and played it for the rest of his life and made his life great. I suggest reading this to baseball fans and even sports fans in general because it's interesting how many successful and famous people in life could have grown up in a bad family and had a bad situation as a kid but he kept making good choices to turn his life around.

  2. I read the book "Into Thin Air" by Jon Krakauer.
This is a great book, and I recommend it to people who love to read thrilling non-fiction books.
Into thin air is about survival. A group of men and a few women go on an expedition to the top of Mount Everest. This is a hard task to do and many people die due to low oxygen levels at higher altitudes. The biggest storm of the year comes and the people run right into it on their way back down. Many people died and it was a huge mess. This is a true story from the authors point of view as a climber and how he survived. There is some gore that is involved in the book,so for people who don't like that stuff ,may need to skip some parts. Overall I love this book!!

  3. This book was about a boy named Jack who lived with his mother and they were really poor that the mother didn't have enough money to pay the taxes. The mother had no choice but to sell her cow. The mother told Jake to bring the cow in the market for a good price. When Jack when on his way to the market, he ran into a butcher who wanted the cow and in return, he had magic beans. Jack didn't know it was manic beans but, he took it. When he brought it home, his mother was furious at him and threw the beans hour in the yard. When Jack woke up the next morning, he found that the beans grew very large and tall. Jack wanted to see what was on the top so he climbed all the way to the top and he saw a castle. When Jack was walking towards the castle, he saw a fairy going up to him saying to take as much gold as possible. Once Jack made it to the castle, he saw a women's standing in the footsteps and told him to leave. Jack pleaded the women. The women saw how hunger he was to she brought him inside and gave him food and something to drink. The women hid Jack in the oven so the giant couldn't see him. The giant smelt Jack's sent but the women lied saying that it was something else. The giant asked for his money to count. Jack wanted that money to bring home to his mother. Once the giant went to sleep, Jack took a bunch of gold and he went home. Jack arrived to his house and his mother was so proud to see all the gold in his hands yet so worried he didn't come home from the night before. Jack was so happy to see the joy in his mother's face. He woke up early one morning to go back to the castle. He climbed until he reached on the top and he had a change of clothes so that the women won't recognize him. He saw the women again but this time, the women wouldn't let him in. Jack pleaded and pleaded until the women finally let him in. The women gave him food and something to drink. Then, she hid him in the closet so the giant wouldn't see him. The giant yet again smelt Jack's sent but the women said something else to change his mind. The giant asked for his bird that can lay eggs made out of gold. Jack wanted the bird so he waited until the giant went to sleep. Once the giant went to sleep, Jack went out of his hiding spot, took the bird, and went home. After a few months, Jack and his mother became rich and and can pay for their taxes. Jack wanted more so he climbed the beanstalk until he saw the castle again. He had a change of clothes so the women would recognize him. Once he reached the castle, the women wouldn't let him in and so Jack pleaded and pleaded until she finally let him in. The women yet again gave him food and something to drink. Then, the women hid him in the copper. The giant yet again smelt Jack's sent so he wanted to check everywhere in the room to see who it was. The giant checked everywhere but the copper and Jack was so relieved. The giant asked for his instrument. The instrument that he had played by itself and Jack thought that the music was beautiful and Jack wanted it. Once the giant went to sleep, Jack hot out of his hiding place and he stole the instrument. The instrument could talk so the instrument held for help. The instrument woke up the giant and he saw Jack and he ran after him. Since the giant drank to much wine, he didn't run as fast. Jack went down the beanstalk and the giant went after him. Jack yelled for an axe and once he got down, he grabbed the axe and chopped down the beanstalk while the giant was still on it. The giant died and Jack, his mother, and the instrument lived happily.

  4. The book I read was called "Cal Ripken Jr Hall of Fame superstar" by Glen Macnow was about how Cal Ripken Jr's baseball career started from the bottom but when he started to play baseball he became one of the greatest the had ever played. Having been exposed to baseball at an early age, Ripken became a star shortstop and pitcher at Aberdeen High School. After the Maryland state championship game in 1978 Ripken was picked in the second round of the 1978 MLB draft by the Baltimore Orioles. After his father Cal Ripken Sr. was selected as coach of the Orioles team, he brought up his other son Billy Ripken to play with them. In 1995 Cal Ripken Jr broke the record of most consecutive games played, held by Lou Gehrig in 1939. He played his 2,131st consecutive game to break the record. Both him mother and father were there to see him and the crowd game him a standing ovation. He finished off with 2,632 consecutive games. That was just one of his many accomplishments in his baseball career.

  5. One of the books I read was "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow" by Washington Irving. In it, a schoolmaster, Ichabod Crane, falls in love with a girl whose name I can't recall. Eventually, another man takes the heart of the girl causing Ichabod to fall in despair. One night, he borrows another man's horse and rides it at night. There, Ichabod encounters The Headless Horseman, who causes the horse Ichabod borrows to gallop alongside The Headless Horseman's horse. The morning after the encounter happens, Ichabod has disappeared without a trace. There are many stories as to what happened to Ichabod after the encounter, according to the book. It is a classic short story which has stood the test of time, and if you watched the play that happened in 7th grade last year, you will have a slight sense of nostalgia.

  7. My book was on "Animals Nobody Loves" By Simon, Seymour. This book talks about animals that nobody loves because they look hideous, are pests, dangerous, or just that people don't know the truth about these animals. It talks about Sharks, Bats, Grizzly Bears, Cobras, Vultures, Spiders, Hyenas, Devil Rays, Rattlesnakes, Gila Monsters, Rats, Cockroaches, Crocodiles, Skunks, Man-of-War, Fire Ants, Coyotes, Octopi, Wasps, and Piranhas. This book is great for people who like animals and want to know more about the animals nobody loves.

  8. "The Cold, Cold Shoulder"
The Cold, Cold Shoulder, by Anne Schraff, is a good, but predictable book. I would recommend it to all who like to read mystery thrillers. This story is about a college student, named Freddy Paine, who goes missing from his apartment. A knocked over alarm clock and blood stains is all that can be found by the main character, Cody. Cody stubbles upon a hole in the apple orchard containing...Freddy Paine. Cody and his best friend Todd have their suspects, and they will stop at nothing to find his killer. The police are no help and Cody and Todd are the only hope. But with a murderer living amongst all who live in the apartment will they find the killer before another victim is found dead in the orchard, or will it be to late? Remember, criminals come in all shapes and sizes.
This book is thrilling and full of suspense however the author gives many context clues to lead you to assume the killer. Though she tries to lead you in the wrong way at one point, I found the story very predictable. Thrilling but predictable.

  10. The Little Mermaid is a disney classic that is filled with talking fish, musical numbers, and cute little corny jokes. However like many of popular fairy tales they came from a more dark original. In this book the little mermaid has fallen in love with the prince despite never actually knowing him. To me it was more lust than it was love. After rescuing the prince when his boat sunk she decided that she wanted to live her whole life with him on the surface. In order to do this she must give her voice and fish tail to the sea witch. when she reaches the surface the prince does shower her with love at first but then marries a princess from another kingdom. Her parents abtain a knife that when pierced through the princes heart it will allow the mermaid to return back to the sea with her family but if she doesn't then she will turn into sea foam. She throws the knife away and faces her consequences. The book in my opinion is a very good lesson for young kids because it shows that she gave away so many sacrifices and yet in the end she didn't end up with her prince. The story itself was entertaining at times but since it was written in the 1800s its not gonna really connect with me who is a 14 year old boy living in 2016. It doesn't have the action and adrenaline pumping story that i would like therefore i got bored quickly at times. There also isnt a villian so that makes the book even more duller at times. Overall this book is a 3 out of 5

  11. I come from a country that was created at midnight. When I almost died it was just after midday. When the Taliban took control of the Swat Valley in Pakistan, one girl spoke out. Malala Yousafzai refused to be silenced and fought for her right to an education. On Tuesday, October 9, 2012, when she was fifteen, she almost paid the ultimate price. She was shot in the head at point-blank range while riding the bus home from school, and few expected her to survive. Instead, Malala's miraculous recovery has taken her on an extraordinary journey from a remote valley in northern Pakistan to the halls of the United Nations in New York. At sixteen, she has become a global symbol of peaceful protest and the youngest-ever Nobel Peace Prize laureate. I Am Malala is the remarkable tale of a family uprooted by global terrorism, of the fight for girls' education, of a father who, himself a school owner, championed and encouraged his daughter to write and attend school, and of brave parents who have a fierce love for their daughter in a society that prizes sons. I Am Malala will make you believe in the power of one person's voice to inspire change in the world.

  14. The book I read was "Time Traveller", by H. G. Wells. This was a great book, and I recommend it to anyone who is a fan of the science- fiction genre. This book is about an English scientist, who tells his weekly dinner guests that time is fourth dimension. He then reveals to the guests that he has created a machine that allows people to travel through this fourth dimension. The scientist, who is referred to as the 'Time Traveller', enters the time machine and is taken to the year 802,701. While in this time period, he meets the Eloi people, who are a group of small, childlike adults. Without spoiling too much, after helping the Eloi, he goes back to the present time to three hours before the dinner and tells the guests about his adventures. Overall, I give this book 4.5 stars out of 5.

  15. White Fang', by Jack London, is a book telling the story of a wolf-dog hybrid's life and the many obstacles he must overcome. The main protagonist, White Fang, must learn to cope with living among humans, although he has the instincts and the body of a wolf. This book covers major events that happen through White Fang's life that tell a tale of wrath, survival, friendship, and love. Many times throughout the book, his wolf instincts and carnivorous behavior get him into trouble. He learns to bond with humans and learns how to live with them.
I think this book would be good for anyone 13 and up because of some reoccurring violent content, but the story it tells is deep while easy to understand. London does a good job of depicting how an animal such as a wolf would see the world from their perspective. A lot of the book is based on White Fang learning the 'laws' of the world and how to obey them, you see him learning not to attack humans, stealing food, and other things that we the humans don't tolerate.
I also believe this book teaches what life was like in the late 1800s in the Yukon Territory in Canada. Right at the beginning of the book, White Fang encounters a Native American tribe, which he spends a lot of the book with. In a part of the book, he even becomes a sled dog for the natives. White fang travels far and learns about many people, places, and things from the winters in the Yukon Territory to the illegal sport of dog-fighting to the people and culture of California.
'White Fang' is another amazing tale from Jack London and is perfect for people who love the outdoors, the wild, or just love animals! This novel will never fail to satisfy.

  18. My book was "Breathless" by Pam Withers. I think that it was a fairly easy, short, but good book, and recommend this book mostly to swimmers. It is a book on a love/hate relationship between these two teenagers. Breathless is about this girl Beverley ("Bev") visiting her Uncle Tom in Hawaii. Bev is big into diving, and so is her uncle, he owns a dive shop and since two of his employees had quit, he needed some help and knew Bev loved to dive. While Bev was visiting, she had two goals for herself, to find a boyfriend and to loose 10 pounds in a week, and she had been successful with both tasks. A young boy named Garth had worked at her uncles shop and little did she know the two began to fall in love...but instead of impressing him, she embarrassed herself because of the choices she had made throught the book. I found breathless a very heartwarming book, and I was really able to relate to it given the age groups. It was a fun read. The message to take away from this is don't change yourself to impress someone else. In Beverley's case, do not starve yourself to loose weight to be able to impress a boy, cause I'm the end, all you'll do is embarrass yourself.

  20. I read The Dark Game: True Spy Stories by Paul B. Janeczko. Before I give my recommendation, I would like to give a quick summery of the book.
First off, it is about the act of espionage throughout history. It talks about the different techniques spies have used to get messages across, such as invisible ink, and how to get insight on how their enemy's operate. Different gadgets are introduced and used throughout the book.
The book will talk about spies from the revolutionary war, civil war, Cold War, WWII, and more. Within those wars, they will talk about the famous spies that participated in them and their story. For example, there was the Culper Ring. They are a group of spies that were established during the Revolutionary war. They gained Intel from the British. That Intel included money they had, weaponry, and strategies that were planned to be used. Overall, the book covers a bit of everything about spying and that is what I like most.
I recommend this book to anyone that likes a tiny bit of action and a lot of history. This is a book on the military without much war. This is non-fiction. Some of the times I felt bored due to not much action and it was a little complicated at times. If you don't mind the lack of action and like to give yourself a challenge of comprehension, I would probably recommend you look somewhere else for a book.

  21. I read the book "The Burning Bridge" by John Flanagan. This book is the second book in the Rangers Apprentice series. This book was mainly focused on a journey of a rangers apprentice named Will and his fellow friend Horace (who is a battle school apprentice). Guiding the two of them is a ranger and a former apprentice of the ranger that trains Will. His name is Gilan. The journey they go upon is because Will and Halt (his teacher) found plans from an evil warlord. The plan were about how the warlord Morgarath was going to ambush them and get revenge on all of Araluen. The two went to the baron and showed him there discovery. After baron Arnold read it he went into full warfare preparations. The Rangers apprentice along with Horace and Gilan were tasked to got to Celtica and get some reinforcements. That's how the story began. On their journey to Celtica they encountered a big problem. All the towns in Celtica they looked at were completely empty. When they came across a big mining town Gilan decided to check it out to see if there was anyone to explain what was going on. In the mean while the two apprentices would set up camp. As they relaxed they heard the voice of a girl from behind. They quickly turned and realized it was a girl about their age with blond hair and green eyes. They welcomed her to sit and warm. They noticed that she was tired and starving. When Gilan arrived back the three were waiting for him. Over diner the girl named Evalyn told Gilan what had happened to all the celts. Evalyn said that wargals (evil warlords men) had invaded all the towns and took the miners. The celts were expert miners. But what would the warlord want with them. Gilan knew he would find out sooner or later but he had to get the sudden news to his King so early in the morning he left the three and rode toward Araluen to tell the news. The three woke up and journeyed after Gilan. They all knew his plan because they told him the knight before. On the journey they were resting behind cover when they all of a sudden heard low chanting in the wind. Will told Horace and Evalyn to hide while he looked to see what it was. He saw a line of wargals and in the middle 12 Celtic miners chained together. The three decided to go after them to see what was going on. As knight fall reached they finally reached the place where the wargals had disappeared. What they saw was mortifying. They saw a bridge in mid construction that lead over the impassable fissure. The all realized that Morgarath had also planned for part of his army to go across the bridge and flank the Araluen army in surprise. When he saw a few wargals go into a crevice he followed alone behind while Horace and Evalyn waited outside. As he crawled through the crevice he saw that it lead to a valley where thousands of wargals and hundred of Celtic miners were. As Will went to go see closer he realized that there was also Skandian warriors. These fierce warriors were worse then wargals. And he overheard them say that a army of Skandians would sneak up behind the Araluen army. He ran from the tunnel and as he ran he found a dead miner in the tunnel. Before he went in the tunnel he saw this miner and asked him a few questions. He found out that the bridge would be finished in about two days time. In exchange for asking the questions the dying miner hade one favor in return. He wanted to be carried into the dark tunnel to die in peace. Will obeyed his wish. Now that he emerged from the tunnel will told Evalyn and Horace the news. They knew that they needed to buy the royal army some time. So they came up with an idea. The idea was to burn the bridge down. They stacked tire wood near each of the pillars holding the structure up. They lit the pillars on fire. As they crossed over they realized only the right side was burning and the left had gone out. Evalyn and Will went across leaving Horace to keep out watch on the other side. When they went across they didn't realize until Horace pointed out that there was wargals emerging from the tunnel

  22. The book "A Break With Charity" by Ann Rinaldi, is about a girl named Susana English who is living in Salem Massachusetts during the Salem witch trials. A possy of girls go to a fortune teller named Tituba to practice satanic rituals. Susana knows she is wrong for wanting to go there but she does. She talks with Tituba about her brother William who is out at sea. Soon after, the leader of the possy, Ann, starts claiming that people are witches. Soon strange occurrences start to happen, and whoever Ann says is a witch, is convicted as a witch. Susana figures out the Ann is calling people witches for fun. Susana wants to tell everyone Ann's secret however Ann says if she does Ann will convict their whole family of being witches. That statement is pointless, because further on in the book, birth Susana's parents are convicted of being witches and are killed. In the end, Susana tells many people Ann's secret, and they write to the judge about the trials. Soon after the judge stops the trials and the mess is over. I give this book 3 out of 5 stars. I would recommend this book if you like historical fiction.

  23. As Evalyn worked on the fire Will took out the wargals. But as the fire began to rage on the left pillar the right one gave way. They wanted to go back across to where Horace was but Will refused. He would stay and make sure the left side didn't go out. More enemies emerged from the tunnel this time though they were Skandians and as will fired at them one hit him unconscious with a rock. And Evalyn rushed to his side. As she did the whole bridge collapsed into the fissure. She was scooped up into the arms of the Skandians along with Will. Despite his friends capture there was nothing he could do so Horace could only ride towards Araluen to inform them of the new threats. If you want to know what happened in the battle read the book to find out. Overall, this book was 5/5.

After a little while his friend from the orphanage came and told Bud he was leaving too and the two of them left Flint. They ended up at a town called Hooversville. From there Bug, Buds friend left on a train, Bud was planning on going on the same train but missed it. Later that day Bud began to walk determined to find his father. Calloway, mr. Lewis mentioned to bud how famous he was. Mr. Lewis then took him on his trip to Flint, then to where his father was supposed to be. When Bud and mr. Lewis got to Buds father's house Herman Calloway was confused and didn't want anything to do with Bud. But his band members took care of Bud for a while until the truth came out of how Bud actually was related to this man he thought was his father. He ended up not being his father at all but was his grandfather. Herman C. Calloway was then very emotional to hear his daughter had died after not being in touch with her at all for so long.

  25. "I Am Malala" is a book that teens and adults will find meaningful. It offers a glimpse into the lives of a Pakistani teenager and her family and the difficulties of living in a country that is in the clutches of extremists. It certainly will make readers a bit more thankful for the educational opportunities we are afforded in this country. The book demonstrates what can happen when one small voice speaks up to inspire change in our world. Malala Yousafzai and her family protested for women and children rights in the Swat valley in northern Pakistan, which at the time was ruled by the Taliban. Tuesday October 9, 2012 started off like most school days for fifteen-year-old Malala Yousafzai. She attended her classes at the school that her father (Ziauddin Yousafzai) founded. On a bus ride home after a long day of testing, Malala Yousafzai almost payed the ultimate price, She was shot in the head by a Taliban gun men. few expected her to survive. But this did not stop the brave and courageous young Malala Yousafzai. Malala Yousafzai refused to be silenced and fought for her right to an education. News of Malala's shooting soon reached all corners of the world. Instead, Malala's miraculous recovery has taken her on an extraordinary journey from a remote valley in northern Pakistan to the halls of the United Nations in New York. At sixteen, she had become a global symbol of peaceful protest and the youngest nominee ever for the Nobel Peace Prize. Malala Yousafzai addressed the United Nations, and called on the world's leaders to provide free education to everyone in the world. The book “I Am Malala” will really make you appreciate the freedom and the opportunities we have in our country.
Although “I Am Malala” is a good and inspiring book it's not for everyone, I would give this book 4.5 stars, I would also recommend this book for young adults and for those who enjoy reading a good book that will inspire you and for those who want to make a change in our world. The book offers a glimpse into the lives of a Pakistani teenager who is living under the constant threat from the Taliban. This book will make you think about the world we live in and the opportunities and rights we are afforded in this country.

  26. “The Little Mermaid” by Hans Christian Andersen is one of the most recognizable fairy tales, and its Disney adaptation is favored by many. The fairy tale focuses on the journey of a young mermaid becoming human in order to pursue her desire for love. However, the original version of The Little Mermaid is quite different from the Disney version as it leads to a darker ending. “The Little Mermaid” is about the mermaid who’s the youngest of her sisters. She has always longed to see what the human world was like, and always envied her older sisters who already have had ventured the human world. Soon, her time finally came and she was able to explore the surface where she saved a beautiful prince from drowning; she became mesmerized by him and instantly fell in love. Although, humans don’t value mermaids and their beauty since their tails are seen as horrific and unnatural. This causes the little mermaid to wish to be human, and to have legs. Being human also allowed her to have an immortal soul; something mermaids didn’t have. In order to receive her legs, the little mermaid went to the sea witch and obtained them there. However, in order to receive her legs, her voice was taken away and every time she were to take a step, it would feel like stepping on knives. And if she were to fail in capturing the prince’s heart—she would turn into foam (like every other mermaid when they die).

The story starts off taking place under the sea in the kingdom of the Sea King. The kingdom consists of many marine plants, and its architecture is constructed with many objects and substances found in the sea such as coral, sand, shells, and pearls. Soon after gaining permission to explore beyond the surface, the setting shifts to the human world. The little mermaid, as well as her sisters, describe the human world as a very lively world full of many different landscapes (i.e the green hills and forests, the city with its chariots). The protagonist of the fairy tale is a mermaid who’s the youngest daughter of the Sea King. In the beginning of the story, the little mermaid was very curious about the human world, but was also naive and ignorant; her decisions were derived from her emotions and the desire to be with the prince instead of her mind. After failing to pursue the prince, she realizes that her devotion towards the prince was one sided and how she carelessly gave up her life for him. However, she continues to love the prince, and showed acts of selflessness and genuine kindness. Hans Christian Andersen demonstrates the message of being kind, despite the harm a person may have caused, through the little mermaid and prince’s relationship. The little mermaid was deeply in love with the prince, and devoted her entire life to him. When she failed to get the prince to reciprocate the mermaid’s emotions, the mermaid knew it was her time to go and died, even though she was offered a second chance in living later on; in order to live, she would have had needed to kill the prince. However, because of the emotional attachment she had towards him, and of her genuine kindness, she spared the prince’s life and ended up dying. Despite being in emotional distress caused by the prince, she continues to love him and be kind towards him, instead of being vengeful.

    1. Disney princesses were always the idealistic life every little girl wanted to live by—”The Little Mermaid” for instance. Being able to fall instantaneously in love at first sight with a prince, and living in luxury is definitely a common aspiration of many. However, the origins of the blissful fairy tale is almost the opposite. Instead of the generic happy ending, Andersen opted for a realistic, dark ending. Personally, I prefer realistic endings in literature as it’s more relatable to real life, and allows me to connect with the text and characters more. I recommend this fairy tale to those who are realists, and seek darker, and realistic concepts, and to those who enjoy the Disney adaptation of “The Little Mermaid” since it’ll allow the reader to learn about the movie’s origins, and to view the movie in a different perspective. Overall, I’d give this story 4.9/5

  27. The book that I read was "Deadly Ants", by Simon Seymour. This was a generally short book. This book was about the harmful ants that exist around us that we are not too aware about. Half of this book was based on fire ants, and the other half was army ants, two of the most dangerous ants in the world. This book provides you with extra knowledge and facts that you should know about when it comes to ants. I learned that fire ants are very aggressive and they are a huge threat to humans and the environment. These ants came from South America not too long ago and have been a huge pest every since. These vicious ants make their homes mainly in large fields, and near wetlands. America has spent fortunes with chemicals trying to defeat these pests, but it did no harm to them. There is basically no way to stop them except avoid them. They will not stop expanding. Army ants are also a threat to America, but not so much as fire ants. They have a less painful bite and are less aggressive, however the numbers of how many there are of this ant is outstanding. There can be more than 1 million of them just in a colony, which is a threat considering how long and hard it would take to banish them all. Overall, I personally did enjoy this book, I thought it was very easy to read, and it was very descriptive which gave me a better understanding of ants. The book lets you know how to stop the ants, what to do when encountering them, how they sting, where the live, and how they live. I would highly recommend for information about all kinds of ants.

  29. A news story worth reading

The book, "Adam Canfield of the Slash", by Michael Winerip, follows the story of Adam Canfiled, a completely overbooked middle school student. He is signed up for any extra curricular activity he has heard of. Adam is completely disorganized and almost always late. He meets Jennifer who is the polar opposite of Adam, she is never late and well organized. As well as juggling her after-school activities including editor of the school newspaper. When she suggests that Adam be the co-editor of the school newspaper, The SLASH, he begrudgingly agrees. It's not until a perky, little, third-grader, demanding that there be an article about the school janitor, triggers to uncovering shocking secrets about the town and school principal. Adam and the school newspaper team need to get to the bottom of the story so they can put out an exciting article in The SLASH. Even if it means going up against the somewhat crazy principle, Ms. Marris.
In the book, the protagonists are likable because they show different qualities. Adam can get interested in most activities but, he also gets annoyed easily. Adam loves adventure and gets invested in being co-editor of The SLASH because "This was what Adam loved most, a juicy outrage to investigate, a story that would put him back on the streets, require him to take death-defying risks to safeguard the common good” (Winerip 9). Jennifer does her best work with anything she is given but, also get angry easily. The book is an average size for a novel. There were some words that are tricky but, overall, it is a middle reading level. The mystery novel is written in normal prose and seems to aim towards younger kids. The Author, Michael Winerip, graduated from Harvard University. He was a news reporter who traveled many places. However, he is known for his award winning children's books. I think that the theme of this book is never giving up. The whole news team was trying to find a good story. When they find out that the principal is hiding secrets, they don't stop uniting they have all the details.
I enjoyed reading this book. While not exactly funny, it was easy to follow and interesting. The characters in the book are very memorable as well as likable. Even though the basic idea of the book has been done many times before, the author found a way to bring new elements to the story. If someone who was a little younger than me read this novel, I think they would have enjoyed it more. Although some moments are extremely cliché, such as how two people that are polar opposites team up to stop the antagonist, there are only a little of them and aren't dwelled on for too long. Overall, I think that anyone who wants a book that will keep you on the edge of your seat, Adam Canfield of the Slash would be an interesting novel for younger readers.

  30. "Life of Pi" by Yann Martel is a great book to read for young adult readers. The protagonist and narrator of the book, Pi Patel, a Tamil boy from India has been shipwrecked and need to survive with very little supplies with the company of a Bengal tiger named Richard Parker. The first hundred pages of the book or part 1 describes his childhood tell the reader how he became the person who he is for the rest book. It is pretty much background info which helps most people understand his life. Some people may think it is unnecessary for all that info.
The second part of the book talks about the actually shipwreck in which he was the only survivor with a couple animals. This part is depressing due to the fact that his family that took care of him so well and worked hard did not survive at all. This section of the book is the survival section. There were so many fun things to read about that make this book extremely interesting. An example of this is when Pi actually controls the tiger so the tiger won't eat him itself. The tiger after it ha sheen train actually feels like a person to cherish and have great times with, the author did this very well. Martel has put so many moments with the tiger and Pi that has made the survival part of the book seem like it isn't that boring.
Like most survival books, it ends with a happy ending of both the tiger and Pi surviving washing up to land where people actually find him. This book has been all about faith, religious beliefs, and survival which have expressed throughout the book. This book had the moments to make a reader happy and sad at the same time which is hard for a book to do. Martel has put a lot of effort into this book for a reader to enjoy this book. Overall, this book is a great book for people who like other books like "The Maze Runner" and "The Hunger Games" or other books which had survival and whoever has read those books, read this book now.

  32. I read the book "Above World" by Jenn Reese. The book, "Above World", is a very good book. I would recommend it to people who like science fiction.

"Above World" has two main characters, Aluna and Hoku. The world has different colonies, and the people within these colonies have supernatural powers and have different looks than humans. Aluna and Hoku are both Kampii from the Kampii colony undersea. Yes, they are technically mermaids, but not until they get their tail. All Kampii get their tails when they are 13 years old, Aluna's age. Aluna, on the other hand, doesn't have a tail. She "failed" the ritual ceremony to get one - or, in other words, made the people running her colony, the Elders, mad. Hoku is younger than Aluna, and they both have legs. All of these colonies have special powers - the Kampii have the power to breathe underwater and have very thick skin for protection and speed - as well as a special breathing shell. The Kampii's breathing shells are dying out, and the Elders aren't doing anything about this. Many people died due to failing breathing shells, but the Elders didn't seem to notice - or if they did - they didn't care. Aluna couldn't bear to see her people suffocating to their death, so she escaped. Hoku's grandmother had a special box from their human ancestor, Sarah Jennings, that was a water safe. She told Hoku to take it to the Above World, or the earth, and see what exists inside and try to make those artifacts help save the Kampii. Hoku, as wished, met up with Aluna, and together they began their journey to save the Kampii. As legend has it, the HydroTek is the source of the power for the breathing shell. Aluna and Hoku needed to go there to save their people. But they didn't know where it was, and found themselves in danger. Somehow, they end up with another colony, the Avairs (they have the ability to fly with speed and power), who become allies with Aluna and Hoku. But do these two children with high dreams ever achieve their goals? Read the rest of the book to find out.

Overall, I would rate this book a 4.5 out of 5. The book was really interesting and caught my attention, but I didn't really like the ending. The ending is a cliff hanger, but I feel the author could have added more to make it more of an ending. Yes, I do understand that this book is one in a trilogy, but the author could have improved the closing of the book. Although the ending didn't appeal to me, I would still highly recommend this book to those who like science fiction and to those who enjoy technology.

The theme of this book is courage, and believe in what you think is right. Aluna was courageous enough to go up to the Above World, even though she knew the risks. Aluna also had a motivation, she believed that her people shouldn't suffocate to their deaths, and that the Elders should make a note of this. The author also hints at trusting the people you love. Hoku was Aluna's best friend, and Aluna was Hoku's. Hoku trusted Aluna for his life. The only reason he knew he would survive the Above World was because of Aluna. Those two also ended up with many friends in different colonies during their journey - all of their survival depended on each other.

  35. We are fortunate to live during an era where people in America are treated equally and with respect. However, throughout the course of American history, people are all aware that this surely was not the case, especially for many African Americans. Although people have read books about slavery during the 1800s, there are few books that actually talk about what it’s like going from a free man to a slave. That is what makes this slave narrative Twelve Years a Slave, by Solomon Northup, so different and appealing.
The memoir unfolds with Solomon giving a short introduction about his life before being captured. Living in Saratoga, New York with his wife and three children, Solomon was a free man skilled in carpentry and violinist. One day, he was approached by two circus promoters. Briefly, they offered him a high-paying job as a musician with their traveling circus. Without informing his wife, Solomon hastily agreed and traveled downstate to New York and then to Washington D.C. Not long after his arrival at the capital, he awakened to find himself drugged and tied to the cell of a slave pen. When Solomon asserted his rights as a free man, he was beaten and warned never again to mention his free life in New York. For twelve years, he was held in bondage as a slave and was forced to perform arduous and grueling tasks. Since Solomon often replied to questions of his master in such an audacious way, he often received several beatings a day before proceeding to work. Using vivid and empowering anecdotes, Solomon Northup reflects the pain he endures until his release.
Although this book is an autobiography, it is very interesting. Not only was this book informative, but it also caused me to feel so lucky that currently, no one in America is a slave. I highly recommend this book to mature readers who are looking for a challenge or a book that can help strengthen their vocabulary skills. On a scale from one to ten, I would rate this book an eight. I would enjoy this book more if it was less repetitive to read. Overall, this book is a real page-turner and broadens one insight on slavery from a free man's perspective.

    Title: Once Upon a Marigold
    Author: Jean Ferris

Cursed princesses, magical caves, and rebellious princes create the unusual yet fun plot that makes up Once Upon a Marigold by Jean Ferris. Ferris has brought together strange royalty, fatherly trolls, a confused tooth fairy, and magic in this fantastic fairytale, making it a must read for middle schoolers and advanced elementary schoolers who would enjoy a mythical adventure.

The plot begins as a tangle of story strands that may look even more complicated than the tooth fairy's map, but eventually it all unfurls to reveal Ferris's well developed secrets. Right from the beginning, the unique story pulls the reader into the magic nurtured by the fantasy world. The story begins with Edric, or Ed, the troll meeting Christian, who was lost in the forest after running away from his home. Forced to take in the boy, Ed realizes that he is bonding with the boy. Ed watches as Christian finds love—through good old p-mail—but worries about Christians heart breaking. As Christian learns more about Marigold, he finds himself wanting to know more and more. When the chance to see her in person arrives, Christian embarks on a journey filled with adventure and close-to-being-exiled experiences. Then comes the humor is Ferris's tale—Marigold and the suitors. As Christian learns more about the royal family, a twist of fate leads to a wonderful happily ever after—well, at least for those who deserve it. It is so tempting to spill the story here and now, but everyone should have a chance to enjoy this journey on their own.

I would definitely read the other two books in the series because of how great this book was. Each time I sat down to read it, I could not get up. The author, Jean Ferris, does a wonderful job in pulling the reader into the wonderful story, right from the beginning. Marigold and Christian's story is definitely an awing fairytale that is filled with more than just what meets the eye. With a heartwarming theme of perseverance, love, and curiosity, this novel is a definite choice for both constant readers and hesitating readers alike, and an enjoyable read for readers of any age.

  37. The book I read was "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland" by Lewis Carroll. This book was about Alice meeting a rabbit and following him down a hole to a place known as wonderland. Once she actually gets into Wonderland, after going through eating and drinking unusual substances to shrink to fit in the doorway, she goes through many adventures in wonderland, including spending time with the queen of hearts. After she wakes up, she finds herself back on her sisters lap by the riverbank, back to the way she started. she then tells her sister about the dream and goes inside for tea as her sister continues to hear about her crazy adventures. I would recommend this book for people who enjoy reading fantasies. It was a quick book to read but a very interesting one that always kept you wanting to read more. I would rate this a 4/5.

  38. "An unexpectedly mind-busting, extremely heart-felt and emotional novel" Rating: 5/5 stars

'I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings' by Maya Angelou is a true story, and therefore an extremely significant book. The novel is perfectly situated for any aged reader, whether younger or old, because it does not specifically direct black lives with visual violence, but rather the emotional pain they experience and have to learn how to cope with. It is a medium length book, with a bit challenging of a reading level, containing a variety of above average vocabulary.

The nonfictional tale 'I Know Why The Cages Bird Sings' tells the detailed story of how the author, who is also named Maya in the story, and her brother, Bailey, grew up in a time of extreme racism and segregation, including the fact that they were both black. In the beginning of the novel, great intelligence and curiosity is seen within Maya, with her struggling to understand the fact that people would judge her by her appearance rather than how good of a person she truly was. At the age of ten, she regards white people as those who feel as they can say and do what they feel like doing and disrespect black elders. She sees them this way following the event from when a handful of white kids make horrible remarks towards her Momma (the nickname for her grandma). Feeling shallow, she makes up a suggestion that she is secretly a white-skinned, blond-haired, blue-eyed girl trapped inside a black's body. This proposes a way for Maya to make herself feel more secure on the inside, and a seemingly more confident young girl on the outside. Not only does Maya have to deal with racism and unnecessary and hurtful comments, but she also has to accept the fact that females were restricted from having certain rights and doing much that men could do back then. Additionally, Maya faces another challenge--that is, her parents abandoned her and her brother Bailey at the age of just three years. Consequently, she has to work in her Momma's shop at a very young age without the comfort or company of her parents, leaving her to be in a deep state of depression.

Without a doubt, this book is highly enjoyable and I would highly recommend it to anyone would would enjoy reading a deep-hearted historical tale. I personally think that younger readers would enjoy it more because they could have a higher emotional connection with the main character, Maya amongst her troubles in life with relatively same-aged readers. 'I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings' is truly an inspirational novel and it made me stop and think for a moment about how thankful I am to live in a world today, without any segregation.

Luckily, Maya's grandma and her brother are just a couple of the role models in her life, and she goes through years of having great influence, aspiring her to completely change the from the once insecure-feeling girl into a whole new person...

  39. Impulsive Decisions & Entertaining Challenges of Growing Up

In the fictional American classic, "Adventures of Tom Sawyer" by Mark Twain, a boy filled with curiosity and mischief goes on wild adventures with his friends in the land of Missouri, Illinois. Tom Sawyer, is a young boy who explores the world around him with a endless amount of curiosity. Albeit, the book's formal and elaborated tone describes his adventure, one that will keep readers of all ages from putting the book down. Comprehensively, Tom and his friends are faced with choices, and learn how curiosity can be good for them when they go on adventures. While other times, their impulsiveness gets them in to some hot water. In fact, most people agree that jumping into a graveyard is a very foolish and simpleminded thing to do for just some dirt on some suspicious characters. In the wake of a tragedy in Missouri, Tom is subject to accusation of trying to rob the graveyard, and incriminates himself of killing someone as well. To the contrary, Tom gets in trouble for his mysterious and open minded curiosity. For this reason he is my favorite character in the book. Additionally, Tom Sawyer's adventures with his friend Huckleberry Finn, really grab the reader's attention, and my attention, like a magnet. Page after page, readers like myself were very determined to find out what happens next. The book's theme, also reflects on life, helping readers learn about how young people learn right from wrong, and how when you're feeling very blue, there is a bright side to everything. Friends will see you through the challenges. Compared to the second book in the series, Huckleberry Finn, I would give The Adventures of Tom Sawyer a 3.5/5 star rating. Even though the story has the ability to keep millions on the edge of their seat as characters find themselves in many surprising situations, in my opinion, each character grows to handle a new day. The story was interesting and entertaining overall, but it wasn't as interesting as the second book in the series, Huckleberry Finn. That being said, it still kept me eager to read on, page after page. The books attention to word choice was complicated at times, however the story was still easy to understand and connect to. I would recommend this book to anyone 10 years old and over, because the story has a lot of nail biting details that will keep them reading page after page, not wanting to miss finding out what happens next!

  40. Heartwarming and funny...read it today! A Review on Eight Cousins, by Louisa May Alcott

“‘Uncle, I have discovered what girls are made for,’ said Rose, the day after the reconciliation of Archie and the Prince.
‘Well, my dear, what is it?’ asked Dr. Alec.
‘To take care of boys,’ answered Rose, quite beaming with satisfaction as she spoke.”
    — Eight Cousins, page 257

Highly esteemed and renowned author Louisa May Alcott weaves yet another endearing tale in Eight Cousins. Taking place in Boston, the story follows a young girl in her adventures as she slowly starts to grow up.

Thirteen-year-old Rose Campbell is an orphan. She has moved to the “Aunt-hill” in Boston to live with her several aunts until her Uncle Alec returns from his voyages at sea. Aunt Peace and Aunt Plenty make Rose eat pills, drink strong coffee, and stay inside, which is supposedly healthy. However, Uncle Alec has other ideas when he returns. Rose’s life changes completely; her daily dose of pills and coffee is replaced with fresh air and exercise. She befriends a housemaid, Phebe, and is even encouraged to spend time with her seven cousins, who are a herd of rambunctious boys (who can be charismatic when they want to). Uncle Alec later promotes learning the importance of housekeeping and sends her off to learn various skills such as cooking and sewing, with her aunts. Their family had never been closer! But what will happen when Rose is faced with the challenge of choosing only one of her relatives to permanently live with?

In my opinion, the best part about this book is the characters, especially Rose. It is hard not to like her naive, altruistic, and strong personality. One must have a great level of maturity and responsibility if they are to meddle with seven boys, and Rose is precisely that type of person. That and the fact that she is a normal girl who is not extraordinarily pretty or smart and can be vain sometimes, adds to the overall honesty of the book. It makes everything feel realistic and draws the reader in. The author’s lighthearted, conversational tone also engages the reader and makes the story relatable.

This book is recommended for people of all ages—children and adults alike. Although it is more suitable for people who read classics and may be dull for someone who is attracted to science-fiction or fantasy, it is still a valuable book to have on one’s shelves.

All in all, Eight Cousins, by Louisa May Alcott, is a beautiful tale peeking into the life of one girl, and is something that everyone should read.

Global warming is a very good book. I would recommend this book to anyone from the age 10 to an adult. It was easy to understand. My favorite part was when the author talked about increase in temperature. I thought it was interesting because overall, I am interested in world issues. I would give it a 4-5 🌟review if I were a book critic. Global warming shows you how you can save resources and not be wasteful and it shows the causes and effects. It teaches you how to preserve what you have and use resources wisely. Did you know that the temperature of earth increased by 4°F in 1 year? Did you know forest fires are one of the main sources of contribution to global warming? The article says that "global warming has lead to diseases such as malaria." This is because
warmer climates mean more mosquitoes. This is what the book "Global Warming" is about. The theme is to not forget to think Green.

  42. I read the book Autumn Street by Lois Lowry. Lowry is popularly known for her books “The Giver” and “Number the Stars”. Autumn Street is a historical fiction book set in pennsylvania during a war. Autumn Street is 106 pages, it isn’t an over all challenging book but it does have some challenging vocabulary terms. I would recommend this book for grades six-nine. In the book a six year old little girl who goes to live with her grandfather while her dad is at war. At her grandfather’s house Elizabeth meets the maid’s son Charles. They become good friends and play whenever Charles is at the house. The book tells of Elizabeth and Charles’ adventures as well as Elizabeth’s home life. One day Charles and Elizabeth go to the woods and when Elizabeth goes home Charles refuses to go too. Will Charles be able to find his way out on his own or will he get lost? The theme of Autumn Street was to always look at things from a different perspective because not everything is as you might see it at first. I would give this book four out of five stars. This book was particularly interesting to me because the characters and events seemed so real and believable. The description also makes it very easy to create a picture in your mind. To me, it was almost as if I was watching a movie instead of reading. I would say that other historical fiction books are better and that this is not the best book I have read by Lois Lowry but it was definitely very good. I do not think this is the best historical fiction book I have read because I liked the historic topics of other books more. Overall Autumn Street was a very good book, I would definitely recommend it to people that enjoy historical fiction.

  43. The book I read was 12 years a slave by Solomon Northup.
I would encourage those people who love American History and the civil war period as this book takes place in the 1860s. I would give the book a 3/5 because there are chapters where they want you to keep on reading and then there are the chapters that you want to skip but in most of the book, they are chapters that want you to keep on reading.
Solomon starts in this book as a free man with a wife and 3 children but being a black man, he gets lured by a well payed job to play his fiddle for an audience and one night on his journey, he gets beat up and is taken to a jail with other African Americans. He is then traded to New Orleans and goes all around America and gains popularity among the negroes in the plantation as well as his white masters. However, before being completely trusted by his masters, he was almost killed 3 times and one of the reasons he almost got hanged was for beating his master because he did the right thing! After 12 years of being a slave, his relatives come to free him and shows that he once was a free man and goes back to New York to live with his family once again.
My favorite parts of this book was when we see Solomon acting for himself and being faithful to those above which ultimatly freed him, as well as the chapter that we see a slave beating up his master!

  44. I read the book "The Eye of Minds" by James Dashner
I definitely recommend this book for people that like suspenseful science-fictions, or any books by James Dashner
The Eye of Minds is about a teenager named Micheal, and his journey through a game to help the government find a terrorist. This book is set in the future, they have these games, which are like virtual simulator games, where you lay down in this "coffin" which is used to transport your brain into a game that mimics real life. Micheal played a game with two of his friends Bryson, and Sarah. They play a game called Lifeblood Deep which is pretty much a simulation of your everyday life. But because of their skill and hacking they are approached by a task force of sorts, called the VNS, who are recruiting players to help them find a terrorist killing people inside the game. It gets a little gory so people who don't like blood, I don't recommend this book. They go through many tough trials, and are pushed to their limits and there are deaths, and plot twists, but overall I think it's another good book by James Dashner. I give it a 4 out of 5 stars.

She lives with her mother, father, and brother, Curtis, who doesn’t talk much. DJ falls behind on her assignments at school since she spends all her time with cows. I would recommend this book for anyone who is really enjoys reading life-like stories. However, this book can get really boring at times. It is not a suspenseful or action pack boo. This book mostly focuses on the meaning of life and why it is important to take risks.

Overall, this book has a deep, meaningful message that is worth reading about.

  48. "Intriguing, creates anticipation and suspense" "Couldn't put the book down"

I read the book, "Scorch Trials", by James Dashner, the second book of the series, "Maze Runner". It started right when the first book left off, continuing the science fiction story. In the "Maze Runner", some boys are put into a maze and have to get out...the "Scorch Trials" is all about them after the maze and their "second test". They have to fight off people with diseases that change their brain and make them zombie-like. The whole time they are trying to get across a huge dessert with extreme weather before a different team. Or at least they think they do. The boys aren't even half sure at the object of the test, except that they have to survive! The book is action packed and easy to visualise.

Over all, I would give this book 5 stars out of 5! It was fast but easy to follow. It also had a good story line and an interesting concept instead of just fighting and action the whole time. I would recommend this book to any reader who likes science fiction because it is suspenseful, mysterious and action packed.

    1. I like the way you integrated quotes in the beginning of your review. Also, I like the way you include talking about the story line and how you compared it to other books.

  49. An Intriguing and Complex Story
    By: Sophia Bloom

The Sherlock Holmes series by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle originally consisted of many novels and stories that were eventually compiled into two volumes. I read the first adventure in Volume Two, entitled The Scandal in Bohemia. In this series, Sherlock Holmes, a brilliant young detective, uses what he calls the power of deduction to read people and solve mysteries. He is tasked with finding and retrieving a picture of the King of Bohemia with a remarkably beautiful and quick witted woman named Irene Adler. She is keeping the photograph to blackmail him, by saying she will use it to ruin the King’s new marriage. The story follows Sherlock and his sidekick John Watson as they attempt to track down Irene Adler and locate the picture. The plot takes place in London, England during the year 1890, and even though I tend to dislike books with historical settings, I really enjoyed this story. It had a complex plot with many components, but was still easy to follow and understand. It also took very little time to read. As a reader, the most difficult aspect of the book was the language, because it was written a long time ago, when they spoke differently than we do today. Even though the language was slightly archaic, I would give this book five stars. It was not very emotional, but it was interesting and amusing to decode the mystery of where the picture was placed. This book was also great because of the interesting characters, and the intense plot line. Readers who enjoy mysteries or thrillers, and people who are fascinated by people with extreme intelligence would especially appreciate this story. However, this is a great book that I think everyone would enjoy. I know I did! This story was riveting and exciting, and had me on the edge of my seat right up until the end.

  50. The Impossible Rescue, by Martin L. Sandler is a remarkable story of one of the most daring rescue missions ever attempted in the Arctic.

The Arctic is a great place for whalers to hunt their prey because whales migrate there due to the cold water. The only problem is, that in early fall, usually late September to beginning of October, the oceans freeze into 2 foot thick sheets of ice. The story explains how a group of 8 whaling ships, hunting far north get caught by a surprise storm in early September and get trapped in the ice. The ships only have enough supplies to last to end of November so there is no chance of waiting out the winter. Not to mention the lack of fuel to keep the stoves running since the temperature in the dead of winter can drop to 60 below Fahrenheit. Around 250 of the men get off the ships and walk 65 miles on the thin and brittle ice to get to a research center and they live there. Meanwhile,Che rest are left to fend for themselves.

Meanwhile, on the other end, one of the ships was able to break through the ice and travel to their home port of San Fransisco. It was mid October when they arrived but they sent new all over the city and no sooner than they arrived, the President had found out of the problem. He declared that a rescue mission be sent out a hours the coast guard ship, bear, a very reputable rescue ship that specialized in Arctic rescues. But even this was daring, a rescue mission to save 300 people in the Arctic in the dead of winter. It would require walking hundreds of miles on the ice with herds of reindeer so while dragging around thousands of pounds of equipment on dog sleds. Want to find out if they succeed?, read the book.

I recommend this book for anyone who likes non fiction, adventurous story's with twists at every turn. When you pick up this book you will not want to put it down, each page will have you hooked to the next one.

  52. The book I read was "Call the shots" by Don Calame. This book is about three friends, Sean, Cooper, and Matt. These friends are always out on crazy adventures, and every plan they come up with goes wrong. They have always been none for getting themselves into unusual situations. Cooper wants to enter a movie contest that you make a horror movie, and the winning prize $50,000. Sean and Matt think that this is a crazy idea, but soon Sean finds out that his mom is having a baby, and he decides that maybe the money will help his family build an extra bedroom for himself. Sean is the only one without a girlfriend, but maybe not until they go ice skating and he skates into Evelyn, this girl tries to make her way into the boys' movie. Sean's sister thinks different things about him, so she sets her best friend up to write the movie script with Sean, to prove the "secret" about Sean. At the end of this book there is a total plot twist, I totally recommend reading it to find out.If you would like to have a laugh this book is meant for you. I give this book a 4/5 because Calame did a nice job making it funny, and keeping it in reality, but some parts in the book were not necessary.

  53. A historical tear-jerker that will make you appreciate life today

The Boy In the Striped Pajamas, written by John Boyne, is a lovely book nearly guaranteed to make you cry, gasp, and only begin to understand how lucky you are to be living in the world we live in today. Taking place during the Holocaust, this book gives the reader a different perspective of the event, and shows them that people just like us had to live through the experience.

The plot is about a young boy named Bruno who lives in a beautiful house in Berlin with his mother, father, and sister, Gretel. Bruno lives cluelessly, completely unaware of what is going on around him. But then the move changes everything. One day, Bruno's parents tell him the family is leaving to a place called Out-With. The days pass, and Bruno is bored and upset about having to leave his old treasured home for where he was now. Until, he meets the Boy In the Striped Pajamas, or as Bruno soon comes to know him: Shmuel. This newfound friend is a Jew living alongside Bruno's house in a camp run by soldiers Bruno's father, where he barely gets anything to eat and is treated horribly, just like all of the other Jews living there. Shmuel opens Bruno's eyes to what is happening around him, limiting Bruno's naiveness. But is it for the better or the worse?

Boyne's spectacular depiction of the Holocaust, this unjust event in history, was captivating, and being able to hear about the tragedy from the perspective of such a young character having to go through this really did change how I viewed history. To all of the people out there who appreciate a good non-fiction read based on historic happenings, I would definitely recommend this book. Fantastic job, John Boyne!

  54. For my book report, I decided to read the book Messenger, the third book in the award-winning Giver quartet by Lois Lowry. This sci-fi novel was a real page-turner, and kept me reading until the end. This was an intermediate to challenging book, written in the formal style.
Matty is an orphaned teenaged boy living with a blind man, Seer. Village is a place for everyone escaping unfairness in their community, and people from all over are welcomed by both Village’s inhabitants and Leader, who was a young boy in the first book of the quartet. Matty loves delivering messages, and is always traveling through Forest to other communities. Things in Village, however, are changing. The Trade Mart, similar to a market, is ruining Village’s inhabitants, replacing kindness with greed and selflessness with selfishness. Village is barring itself to newcomers, and Forest is thickening. Matty must travel through forest to bring Seer’s daughter, Kira, to Village before it closes its doors to everyone and everything. Kira, featured in the second of the four books, must travel with Matty through Forest, which is trying to ensure that they never leave the darkness and danger that has recently enveloped the land. Will they make it to Village before it's too late?
This novel, appropriate for young adult readers, has at its heart the message to persevere through unkindness and difficulties. This astounding book pulls the reader through a rollercoaster of emotions: from pure sadness, to joy, to suspenseful fear and mistrust. This terrific creation by Lois Lowry will leave readers thinking long after the last page has been turned.

  55. I read the book "Number the Stars", by Lois Lowry. The story takes place in Copenhagen, Denmark in 1943, during the time of the Nazis. The parents of 10 year old Ellen Rosen have gone into hiding so they will not be "relocated", and they need someone to take care of Ellen until it is safe to move to Sweden. Annamarie Johansson steps up to the plate, as she and her family decide to put their lives on the line to care for her best friend Ellen. As the German soldiers roam the streets 24/7, and constantly stop into houses, nobody is safe. Soon after the Johansson's take Ellen in, Annemarie is asked to go on a dangerous mission to save the lives of the Rosen family.

I would definitely recommend this novel to anybody that enjoys suspense. Lois Lowry helps us understand just how good we have it today, and how we take it all for granted. Not only did I learn a lot about what it was like to live during the 1940s, but "Number the Stars" kept me on the edge of my seat. A great storyline, and characters that many could relate to, were just a part of the reason why I could not put this book down. Overall, I would give this novel a 5/5 stars.

  57. I read a book called Kizzy Ann Stamps written by Jeri Watts. Kizzy Ann prepares for her first year at an integrated school, and as she does that, she worries about the color of her skin, the big scar that runs from the corner of her right eye to the tip of her smile and fitting in with the other kids in her new school. She expresses her feeling by writing to her new teacher about her troubles and asking questions about the white school. The new teacher is very friendly, supportive and understands Kizzy and how she feels through the letters. Meanwhile, her brother James isn’t having that great of an experience at school and her annoying white neighbor won’t leave Kizzy alone. But Shag, her border collie is her refuge. Kizzy knows Shag and herself can compete in the dog trials but will she be able to enter? The rest of the book reveals this and other details.

This novel is a historical fiction novel that is based on American history. This book took place during the civil rights movement in 1963, around the time Martin Luther King Jr. gave his “I have a dream” speech. The book emphasizes how blacks and whites should be equal by showing Kizzy as a black student who tries to fit in in the white school with the new kids there. I think people that enjoy historical fiction and learning about American history will enjoy this book the most. This book doesn’t have chapters and is an epistolary novel because it only shows that letters that go back and forth between Kizzy and Mrs.Warren. I think the format of the book makes it more interesting to read. Overall, the author did a great job writing this novel and I would rate the book 3.5/5

The theme of this book is to trust others when you tell them something and talk it out. Kizzy finds herself very unsure about transferring to an integrated school but once she talks it out with her teacher Mrs.Warren, she feels a little bit better about transferring to her new school. Kizzy trusts Mrs.Warren when she tells her all of this stuff.

  58. I would give the book "Romeo and Juliet" a 3 star. The book was a lot of "British English", such as saying "thee" and "shall" and it was a little hard to understand. But the plot was exciting and written with emotion. And I would have been able to give a better rating, if it didn't have weird language. It still took time to understand that. But it was a funny story and it all came down at the end. They were also married and lots of events happened. They swore no matter what happened, they would hold on to each other. At the end Romeo thought that Juliet was dead but, she surprisingly came back. And they lived happy. Would have been a wonderful play! I recommend this book to anyone who like romance and suspense.

  59. "Just call me Joe" By Frieda, Wishinsy

  60. The book I read is called "Kidnapped" by Elizabeth Carpentiere. This book had small stories about kids that have been kidnapped. I thought this was interesting because based upon the stories we can learn what not do do in order to be safe. Although some of the stories were non-relatable, they were interesting and informational. Basically the mini stories told how the person was kidnapped, their family life, and what happened. My favourite story is about one girl being kidnapped and how her sister was the one who helped police find the kidnappers. Even after being rescued, "Kidnapped" informs you that it was not an easy journey for the person to heal. I loved reading how the community helped them cope woth living the life everyone should live. I would recommend this book for just random reading.

  61. "The Hobbit", An Outstanding Magical Tale

This book starts off with a little hobbit named Bilbo Baggins. One day, he was relaxing in his convenient hobbit hole. Different from his daily routine, a great and wise wizard named Gandalf, arrived at his house. But Gandalf did not come to Bilbo's home just for company or pleasure. Bilbo was being persuaded by the wizard to join thirteen other dwarfs, and Gandalf himself, on a journey to the Lonely Mountain. There, the group would find their way to, what used to be the city of Dale, and try to reclaim the gold they had lost many generations ago, due to an invasion of a frightening dragon that now had possession over their treasures. Not very long after they set out, Bilbo and his small team would experience difficult and unexpected obstacles. These conflicts not only included hazardous thunderstorms and extreme weather, but they also included sickening trolls and goblins that were scattered throughout the different paths that lead to their destination. Over the course of the novel, Bilbo gradually rises up in power, and becomes the leader of the group of dwarves. Later in the book, the dragon is killed, and the treasure was now open for the dwarves to take back. But when other creatures figured out that the dragon was killed, they were very anxious to take the gold and jewels for themselves. As a result of the desire for the treasure, a battle occurred on the a Lonely Mountain, between the five different tribes that wanted the riches. Will Bilbo's group win the gruesome battle, or will the men, goblins, orcs or elves succeed?

General Information About The Book And The Author: "The Hobbit", by J.R.R Tolkien, is a bestseller novel that has won many different awards across the globe. The author is of British decent, and has been writing popular books since the early 1920's until 2015. He is very experienced in the writing field. Moreover, "The Hobbit" is not very long, and is the first book of a collection of four.

My Review: Overall, I would give this book 5 stars out of 5. I really enjoyed reading the novel, because after every chapter, the author left the reader with a hanging thought that caused them to read on and find out what would come next. Additionally, J.R.R Tolkien wrote the book with fantastic descriptions. He created imagery, that caused the reader to throughly understand the plot of the story. The imagery also painted a clear picture inside the reader's minds of what the characters and the settings really looked like. This caused the readers to feel like they were in the story itself. In addition, this is a fantasy novel. I love to read fantasy novels, because they usually include a lot of magic. As a matter of fact, I would say that "The Hobbit" is one of the best fantasy novels I have ever read. All and all, I would definitely recommend this book to anybody would enjoys reading fiction.

  62. Around The World In Eighty Days
    4/5 Stars

Phileas Fogg was an odd man, and he always followed the same routine every day. He was precise as one could be, and he never did anything out of the ordinary. The year was 1872, and Phileas Fogg—a man with no family, no wife, and no children—resided in London, England. One day, while he and his friends were playing their daily game of whist—an old English game—they bet that he could not travel around the world in 80 days. Phileas Fogg wagered half of his fortune, 20,000 pounds, that he could travel around the world in 80 days. He wasn't interested in winning, but only the adventure that was sure to await him. Even though one mishap could destroy his plans, he was up for the challenge. Not wanting to go alone, he teams up with his newly-hired servant, not aware of the dangers that surely face ahead. I enjoyed reading the book, and there were many plot twists that I didn't expect. The book is written using many old English words, which I felt helped contribute to the old-style feel of the book. But will delays stand in their path? Will they be stranded and left for dead? Will Phileas Fogg lose his fortune? From a detective who will stop at nothing to halt the journey, to several impressive rescues, read to find out what happens to Phileas Fogg, his servant, and the people he meets along the way!

  63. Out Of My Mind, written by Sharon M. Draper, is a New York best seller and highly recommended by many critics. This realistic fiction book, makes the reader feel as if in the in the main character, Melody's, shoes. The book is set in present time, and the author does a good job of clarifying where the book takes place. Things are set in a modern day world and nothing futuristic is in the story. Melody, has a disease called cerebral palsy. This affects her ability to talk, walk, or even feed herself, but she has a photographic memory. Because of her disease, many people look at Melody as if she is stupid, but they could not be further from the truth. Throughout the entire plot, Melody fights to prove herself to the people who doubt her. In my mind the theme of this book is to never let anyones opinion of you stop you from achieving your goals. Or in other words, never let anyone get in the way of your dreams. Personally, I think this book was truly inspiring, and I could connect to it. Though I do not have anything as serious as Melody, everyone has things in their life that set them back and may cause them to be looked at differently. The things Melody can do and tries to do can really inspire the reader. Though many ratings for this book were a 4.5 stars, I would rate it a solid 5 stars. Because of the fact that this book was so well written, and has an amazing message, I would recommend this book in a heartbeat.

  64. I read the book "Hatchet" by Gary Paulson. In the book, Brian is on his way to his father's house in Canada after his parents divorce and share custody of their son. In a strange turn of events, the pilot, also the only other person on the plane, has a heart attack and dies mid flying. Without thinking, Brian manages to crash-land the plane into a lake and escape with nothing more than a few bruises. Before boarding the plane, Brian's mother gave him a hatchet, which comes in handy soon enough. In order to survive, he needs to find food and shelter until he is rescued. It is just like Survivor, but real and extremely terrifying. With his hatchet by his side, Brian is able to gather berries and put together a shelter out of some branches and a cave (this kid was most definitely a Boy Scout). As the days go by, he is greeted by a bear in the woods, learns to make a fire and a fishing spear, and gets attacked by a porcupine. Brian waits patiently for a plane to come rescue him. When a plane did fly overhead, needless to say, he was not successful in making himself known to the pilot and remained on the island. As time passes, Brian acquires hunting skills and is able to hunt poultry and other animals. He later encounters an unhappy skunk and moose, and on top of that, has to sit through a tornado. The tornado ends up working in his favor and brings the crashed plane from the bottom of the lake to the surface. Brian, with his handy hatchet, is able to retrieve the survival pack from the inside of the plane. In the survival pack he finds a sleeping bag, a compass, cooking tools, lighters, matches, bandages, and a rifle. Also in the bag is an emergency transmitter, which seems to have been broken in the crash after Brian fires it several times. To his shock, the transmitter was not broken. Out of no where, a plane appears to his rescue and takes him back to the city.
I really enjoyed this book. Overall, I would rate this as an 8/10 or 4/5 stars. Though it was interesting and kept me on the edge of my seat, there were some grotesque parts that could have been excluded from the book. I would most likely recommend this book to a friend, but just don't get sick while reading it.

  65. The Heir, by Keira Cass, is the fourth book of a science fiction series called "The Selection"which is set in the future of The United States, Illéa. The novel starts off with Edalyn, a spoiled princess who refuses to find true love. All her life, Princess Edalyn had been preparing to be the queen of Illéa, but now things started changing because once her father has eliminated the castes in the society, but although people were initially relieved, many citizens begin to riot all over the country due to post-caste discrimination. To distract the attention of the public until they can figure out a way to fix the situation, her parents suggest that Eadlyn should go through her own Selection. The selection is a process where 35 men (in Edalyn's case) get chosen to live with the princess and try to win her heart so she can have a husband. Eadlyn strongly opposes to the idea, as she doesn’t feel ready for marriage and she doesn’t want to love and be married with a stranger. However, she reluctantly accepts to have a three month Selection, for the sake of the country's entertainment, and of her parents, who agree that it’s all right if she doesn’t choose anyone in the end.
Eventually, 35 men are randomly selected. But chaos starts blooming when Edlayn starts rudly eliminating men publicly. Edalyn was on the papers and on the news which called her a strict and selfish princess, which hurt Edalyn badly. Further ahead on the journey of the selection many men get eliminated, but Edalyn also realizes many of them are willing leave their families to marry Edalyn. That's makes her emotional in the case that her brother, who is about to get married, might disappear from her life. So during a party, Edalyn tells her brother to leave his girlfriend because she was trying to steal him away from Edalyn. That makes Her brother, Ahren, upset. So he eloped with his fiancé and secretly got married all the way in France. When Edalyn's mom finds out about this she gets a heart attack, and with everyone blaming her for the tragedy many provinces don’t want her as their future ruler and she is one of the reasons they are now in a riot. Thus, Ahren advises her to open herself to her people, to be brave and feminine at the same time and above all to find love in her life.
Eadlyn is angry and hurt by his words and his departure, but when she goes to her parents’ room to inform them about Ahren's reason, she finds photos of them during their own Selection, their wedding and the birth of their children. Eadlyn recognizes that her father had modeled this room as a shrine of his love for her mother. Fully realizing now the love her parents share, she can understand why Ahren chose his girlfriend over his family.
Afraid of losing her mother and after seeing all those people around her and the bonds they share with each other, Eadlyn finally realizes the importance of love in her life. She decides that she wants to find in the Selection someone who will love her, stating that at the end of the Selection, she "will have a ring on her a life."
Overall, I would give this book a rating of 4 out of five stars. I love how Keira Cass demonstrates a simple choice in life and exaggerates it to make it tremendously important. This books makes you feel like you are Edalyn and you are in her shoes right now. But this is also part reality which every girl has to face sometime or another in her lives. This book conveys the strength of a woman and the power of love, and a very distinct topic of a woman ruling. I enjoyed reading this book because it generates very unique ideas of what it would be like if something like this really did happen in our society. Something which I do not like about this book is that it leaves on a completely broad topic, and it ends with a cliffhanger! But I would totally recommend this book!

  66. The book I read was called "Aladdin and the Wonderful Lamp" by an unknown author. This was a short story, however it was a quite difficult novel. In this story there is a boy named Aladdin, and one day a magician from Africa convinced Aladdin that he was his uncle. So at first the magician treats Aladdin kindly and with respect. A couple of days go by and finally the magician could do what he really wanted to do. He leads Aladdin to a stone, and the magician said magical words and all of a sudden the stone turns into a cave. The magician then instructs Aladdin to walk down certain halls, without touching anything or he will die. The magician then tells Aladdin to walk down a hall with fruit trees and in the hall there should be a lighted lamp. Aladdin must take the lamp, pour out the oil and hand it to the magician. Before Aladdin goes in the cave, the magician gives him a ring. Aladdin refuses to give the magician the lamp. As soon as Aladdin is about to step out of the cave, the magician says some magical words and the cave closes, trapping Aladdin inside with nothing that may help him survive. Aladdin then realizes that he was tricked by the magician and figures out that the man was not his uncle. The magician read in one of his books about this lamp and the amount of power that it has. The magician had Aladdin come along with him because the lamp must be received from the hand of someone else. Two days pass and Aladdin is still trapped. He prays and rubs his ring that the magician forgot to take away from him. All of a sudden a genie pops up and asks Aladdin for a wish. Aladdin wishes to get out of the cave and therefore is back outside. From there on Aladdin keeps on making wishes, that come true. The biggest wish of all was marrying the daughter of the Sultan. For this to happen, the Sultan and Aladdin made a deal and Aladdin ended up marrying the princess. The magician comes back in search for the lamp that is at the place where the princess and Aladdin live in. Aladdin is gone hunting and will return in a couple of days. The princess, knowing nothing about the power that the lamp holds decides to trade the old lamp for a new lamp from the magician. Then the magician gains all of the power, and Aladdin finds the magician and kills him by poisoning his wine. Later the magician's younger brother disguises himself as a religious, important woman, trying to trick Aladdin by thinking that she is a holy woman. Aladdin ends up figuring out that the woman is a fake and before the magician can steal the lamp, Aladdin kills him and lives happily ever after, just like in any other fairy tale.

Overall this story is fairly fascinating and somewhat good. So I personally give it a 3.5 out of 5 stars because there wasn't really anything that made me want to keep in reading. I have read better novels than this, however this is not the worst one I have read, some parts were cool and fun to read, but others weren't.

  68. Jules Verne had written yet another wonderful fictional adventure novel. It was named, Around the World in 80 Days. Jules Verne was an author that lived from 1828 to 1905. He wrote many incredible science fiction and adventure novels such as Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea, Journey to the Center of the Earth, The Mysterious Island, and over 15 more. As a great addition to the Extraordinary Adventures series, this novel did not disappoint.

The main character Phileas Fogg is an irregular man living in his mansion on Saville Row. Although showing much of his sympathy to others, he seems almost emotionless as described by Verne. This man was one of the most exact and OCD people I've ever known, other than very few. He always took the same amount of steps to get somewhere, he had an irregularly designed clock, and entered to places like the Reform club at the same time, on the dot. As the unclear man lived his abnormal life, he came upon a new servant, as his old one left. This new man named Passepartout (sounding like Passport two), a Frenchman, had an unpredictable character. His wavering IQ and uselessness at moments proved how back and forth he was. Being Fogg's butler, he was much more like Sancho Panza in Don Quixote rather than Robin and Batman.

On a perfectly regular day at the Reform Club, Fogg and his friends had a dispute about how long it took to travel around the whole world. During a simple card game, Fogg makes a wager with his friends, stating that he could travel around the world in approximately 80 days. Putting a fortune of €20,000 on the line, his life is on the line. Phileas, planning to start his journey on that same day, returns home to his servant Passepartout, unexpecting his master's return. After quickly packing up and boarding the train arriving at 7 pm, they are about to start their long adventure when Passepartout shouts, "'Alas! In my hurry—I—I forgot—"
"What?", "To turn off the gas in my room!", "Very well, young man," returned Mr. Fogg, coolly; "it will burn—at your expense.'". This moment in the book was one of the most hilarious as Jules uses humor to add to this serious themed book. This scene further acknowledges the sudden changes in Passepartout with his stupidity appearing at certain parts. After arriving at his first destination two days early, will he be able to finish the rest of his journey with no trouble at all? Read to find out!

This top knot book is awe inspiring and had great influence over the genre of Science Fiction and Adventure. With plenty of suspense and action, this novel was great and is still known to be great today. After reading the first few chapters of this book, I couldn't stop reading because something different happens on the next page. Although many think there isn't enough action in the plot and that many parts are worth skipping rather than reading, I still personally think that this book is off the charts and should be appreciated by those who read it. I give this book 5/5 stars and I think that after reading it, you will too!

  70. I read 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea, by Jules Verne. The version I read was more of a graphic novel style. It still tells the same story, but it is shorter, and using slightly different wording. Its is a fantasy/adventure story with 65 pages. 20,000 Leagues tells the story of Professor Annorax, who with his crew is sent out to kill a sea monster. After a strange turn of events, him and two of his crew members find themselves on The Nautilus, a huge submarine piloted by the mysterious Captain Nemo. Though technically his prisoners, they go on a grand undersea journey, and see wonders the above world can only dream of. The original version was written in much more complicated, older language, but this one focuses on formal, but easier to understand wording. This doesn't change the overall story though. The book also features well-done, colored pictures. These two addition make the book more appealing to younger audiences. Older audiences could still enjoy the book, but they would most likely prefer the original version. 20,000 Leagues also features good themes, that can really inspire the reader. Overall, I give the book 4 stars. I liked the story, and the illustrations were nice as well. I just feel that it was a little more targeted towards younger audiences, and possibly some parts of the original story were left out.

  71. The book that I read was called “Beyonce” by Saddleback Educational Publishing. This was a short biography about the famed life of singer and actress, Beyonce Knowles-Carter. It follows her journey from when she learned she wanted to become a singer when she was very young, to present day. It takes you through the journey of the beginning of her first group, Girl Tyme. It shows you the difficulties that the girls went through, members coming into and out of the group, the name also changing to Destiny’s Child. The book also then took you through the timeline of Beyonce’s life to when Destiny’s Child split and she started singing on her own. Her performances, love life, media difficulties, and family was greatly portrayed in the well written book.
I would give this book 4 out of 5 stars because, even though it was a short and easy read, the author did a very nice job in taking the reader through the experience of growing up as the world famous Queen of R&B, Beyonce. I would highly recommend this book for research purposes or to simply learn more about the singer.

  72. White Fang by Jack London, is a book about survival. In fact, it's completely about survival. London writes the story in perspective of White Fang and tells about his life story. It actually focusing on his mother Kiche. Kiche is a fierce dangerous wolf, as referenced to as She-wolf, she doesn't really change in the story. But, one thing to know is she would risk anything for her child. She encounters many challenges throughout the book like animals, famine, illness and the harsh arctic elements. When White Fang encountered a dangerous Lynx, she risked her life to save him, but suffered major injuries. This lead to weakness and illness. Being in the wild, she couldn't really tend to her deep wounds from the Lynx's sharp claws... With this, she grew weak and sick. But, before all this when she was part of a larger wolf pack, they had a terrible famine. This was when they could find food for days, weeks at a time! Many wolves died and barely any survived. She and some others were spared. She eventually broke of with 3 other wolves. They did die after that. White fang on the other hand, even as a pup he was a born hunter. He was fierce and wasn't afraid of anything. He always starred his opponents in their eyes. Over the years he became the ultimate predator. But after being separated from his mother, he joined a local Indian tribe that had many other dogs. But, these dogs were domesticated. He was different. But, the one who took most care of him was Grey Beaver. Grey stuck up for White Fang and in return White Fang was loyal. Sadly thought, there was a pother famine and many tribes members died. In coastal Alaska, it was the time of the Klondike gold rush and before White Fang knew it the 'fire gods' or his Indian tribe was replaced with the 'white gods'. White Fang found his mother in another tried but, she had forgotten him. It had been a year or so since their separation and she forgot her son. He hadn't forgotten her but, he had gotten over his lost. After trying to approach here several times and being rejected several times he gave up hope. Beauty smith is the one who took White Fang (from Grey Beaver). He made bets with people to see who could kill the opponents by putting White Fang in these matches. White Fang before, hated pain and discomfort, but, now he would do all of this just for his 'god'. He has really connected to his true care takers and has really made a spot in his heart for others he cares about, yet still keeping the fierce, wild and dangerous personally

This is definitely a great read for someone who likes books on animals too! I definitely enjoyed it and if you read it I bet you would too!

"Aladdin and the Wonderful Lamp", written by an unknown author, is the story of the son of a poor tailor, who becomes a rich and wealthy prince though the enchantment of a magical lamp. Although this story was not lengthy, it was a rather advanced read. The story begins with a cunning magician tricking Aladdin, the tailor's son, into thinking he is his uncle. Aladdin of course, believes this as he did not know much about his father's family. The magician buys Aladdin new clothing and they go on a journey through the mountains. Eventually, he leads him to a stone which turns into a cave. He instructs Aladdin to walk through the cave to retrieve an important item for him. The magician wanted Aladdin to get the lamp but Aladdin refused to give up the lamp to the magician and he disappears. This angers the magician, and he uses his magic to trap Aladdin in the cave. Aladdin is stuck there for a few days, until he rubs the lamp and a genie comes out. The genie grants him a wish and Aladdin is out of the cave. The story then goes on as Aladdin used the genie to get wealth. When Aladdin sees the princess, it's love at first sight. He asks for her hand in marriage, but must wait a while before he can marry her. Her father, the Sultan, makes him wait 3 months. Aladdin obeys this and when time comes, he uses the genie's enchantments to impress the Sultan. He builds a grand palace and gets permission to marry the princess. The magician finds out Aladdin is a rich prince and set off to steal the lamp. The magician also captures the princess as well. The story concludes with Aladdin rescuing the princess and killing the evil magician.
Personally, I didn't enjoy this book as much as I thought I would. It wasn't interesting enough to make me excited to read more. However, I do like the different events that happened. It was different from the usual stories of Aladdin. I would rate this 4 out of 5 stars, and I do recommend it if you want to read a different twist on a classic story. Overall, it was a good read.

  75. I read a story called The Little Frenchman and His Water Lots by George Pope Morris. A Frenchman named Monsieur Poopoo worked making toys on Chatham street. He eventually grew tired of this, and he wanted a bigger adventure. He went to an auction where they were auctioning off land so people could buy them. He bought some land in Long Island. He was told he'd have to travel there by ship, though he wasn't sure what for. He met a famer and asked him if he knew his way around the land. The farmer had lived there his entire life. When Monsieur Poopoo told him about the land he had bought, the farmer told him all his land was under water. Monsieur was very confused and didn't believe what he was hearing. He went to his land and it was, in fact, all under water. He was furious, feeling like he had wasted all of his hard earned money. So he went to the auctioneer. He told him all of his land was water, and he asked for his money back. The auctioneer wouldn't budge, so Monsiuer ended up going back to France to continue his job. I liked this story and thought it was funny, and it's not too long so I recommend it. I rate it 3.5 stars.

  76. The book I have read was The Maze of Bones, it is the first book of the 39 Clues series. The author who wrote the book was Rick Riordan, however the series had many authors who wrote different books within the series. The book is easy to understand, but you must remember small details for the small details play a bigger part in the plot throughout the book and series itself. The main idea behind the entire plot of the first series is spoken through Mr. McIntyre, a minor character in the book who has a major role later on, "the prize would make the winners the most powerful human beings on earth"(Riordan). The book contains an adventures atmosphere with different parts of the hole world being its landscape, the place are protagonists visit in the book is a city in France. They not only go to that city, but they go many places that are based of real places in the world, and they use many different kinds of transportation to get to each one. The setting not only changes with our main characters, but throughout the book the setting can switch back and forth from other characters important to the book. The theme of the book is clearly over coming hardships, this is shown with many characters of the book.

The book contains many important characters who have hidden backgrounds that will not be reveled until further books in the series: Dan and Amy Cahill our are main characters, along with their au pair Nellie Gomez; Grace Cahill; William McIntyre; Jonah Wizard and his father; the Kabra family; the Holt family; Alistair Oh; Irina Spask; the triplets Ned, Ted and Sinead; and many other characters who join the hunt for the clues.

Dan Cahill and Amy Cahill are brother and sister, who live with their Aunt Beatrice in Boston. Dan Cahill is reckless and daring, but he posses a special skill. Amy Cahill is shy, spends her time with adults then people her own age, and loves reading books. Dan and Amy had to go to the funeral of the only person who ever cared about them, Grace Cahill, with other relatives who hated them. They were brought to a reading were they had two choices walk away with 2 million dollars or go on an adventure that will bring them close to death, which one will they pick and what will be next?

Maze of Bones will definitely intrigue readers who love mysteries, adventures, and exploring the world through this fictional book. I will give this book 5 stars for not only the well plotted details and changes the characters experience, but also that the book is based in modern times and the setting takes you exploring through many parts of the world. There are even hidden codes within the book itself, so pay close attention when reading.

  77. I read the book Cheetah written by Wendy A. Lewis and illustrated by Graham Ross. Cheetah is a picture book about a little girl named Maggie that went to her dads work one day and before she left work with her dad and her sister they went to visit the pond behind the drop zone. When they get to the pond Maggie finds a cool leopard frog that she later asks her dad if she can take home. He says no at first then Maggie promises to take good care of the frog, and her dad allows her to take the frog home. On the way home from the pond she decided to name the frog cheetah because she looks like a cheetah. When she gets home Maggie's mom says that she can only keep cheetah for a week and it makes Maggie mad. Read the book to find out if she gets to keep cheetah or put her back in the pond after a week. I would recommend this book to children and early readers. I think the author was trying to relay the message that, it is better to keep animals in their natural habitat rather than in a box. I think this book deserves 4 out of 5 stars because it was fun to read but it was a little easy.

  78. In the book Blink and Caution, by Tim Wayne-jones, Blink, a teenage boy, and Caution, a young girl, become tangled in a series of unexpected events. All blink wanted was some food at a hotel to satisfy his hunger, but his curiosity drew him to a kidnaping, leading him on a dangerous and unexpected journey. Caution was both a girl friend, and a partner in crime with her boyfriend, but after years of abuse and violence, Caution decides to leave him and take his money and go back to the streets were she once lived. These two characters later unexpectedly meet up with each other because of a surprising incident and coincidence, and slowly developing more trust and a stronger friendship while they are partners in crime.

I thought Blink and Caution was not a bad or great book. As this was a good book, I would recommend it to older age groups. It was slow moving for a while and confusing at some points due to the character changes and switches between first and second person. The plot developed into a suspenseful and interesting story after a while, which could be disinteresting at times. During the read, the book had some good moments, and some bad. I would rate the book seven out of ten stars, mainly because of its slow plot, and it's story, which could be hard to follow. Besides its plot, the book had many good moments. This mystery/thriller had action, suspense, and a story which all helped develop the characters personalities, making it great for someone into a mystery type book.

  79. My book is "Baseball Heroes", which is written by Glenn Stout. This book tells us about the many incredible baseball players that ever lived. Such as Jackie Robinson, Hank Greenberg, Fernando Valenzuela and Ila Borders. Not only does this book explain the many things that they did on the field, but focused on their backstory as well. All of these players went through tough times when they were young but became such amazing ball players. Some of the things that were made fun of was their race, religion, gender, or even ethnicity. Hank Greenberg for example, was beat up when he was a young boy due to his religion. He was Jewish. Everyday he would turn a corner and there would be older and bigger kids waiting to pick on him. He would try to fight back but it was no use. The kids were bigger and they outnumbered him. However, growing up in this life taught Hank something. It taught him that it doesn't matter if he strikes out and gets booed, all that matters is that he tried and he did his best. Nobody can say different. As you can see, this novel "Baseball Heroes", shows not only baseball lovers, but non-baseball lovers like me that we have a good life and that if you put your mind to anything and try your best, you will get through life just fine.

  82. Great Book if You Like Action and Zombies

The novel Scorch Trials by James Dasner is an excellent action packed read that takes place in a dystopian society. This book starts with a teenage boy named Tomas, at a facility that they at first think is to help them but things quickly go down hill and Tomas, antagonists from the first book, as well as completely new characters end up going out side where the majority of this book takes place. Along their journey they have to face zombies and a evil organization named WCKD. Throughout the story aspects of futuristic technology does take place however this book is not nearly as far fetched as the first book.

Have you ever wondered what would happen if a zombie like disease killed off most of the world? If so you may find enjoyment in this novel as that is just about the entire plot of this book with a few more smaller details about curing the disease. If you read this book I can guarantee you that you will ask yourself many times, what would I do? The characters in this novel are also very relatable as they seem like real people who you think could actually die.

Overall I think that the Scorch trials is a great science fiction book that action lovers will adore as the action and danger in this book start right from the beginning and it doesn't stop except for a few small points until the end. However if you are looking for a very futuristic story with cool technology and laser battles you may be disappointed by what this book has to offer, and if this is the case I suggest that you read a book like Enders Game instead.

  83. The emotional story, A Dream Of America written by Dee Phillips, follows the life of an immigrant eager to finally move to The United States. Maria is hoping to discover a new life in America, compared to the one she previously had in Poland. In Poland there were no jobs and little food. In addition, she was hoping to go work on a farm outside of New York City where she hoped to finally reunite with her husband, Leo.

In the late eighteenth century and early nineteenth century many immigrants were traveling to the United States in search of a better life. They would travel by boat from their countries where they went to Ellis Island to be examined for disease. If they were found to be ill they had no choice but to return to the country they were native to. But if they were fortunate enough to not carry any illnesses then they were allowed to live their dream. The american dream. Maria was lucky to not have any diseases but unfortunately her brother, Milek, did not pass the

requirements. Devastated, Maria continued, ignoring the fact that Milek was forced to leave. She held her dream of living in America highly on her list of priorities. Unable to travel to her husbands farm, because her money had been deteriorated rapidly, she found work making cloth in a factory. Working in a factory where it was hard to breathe because the air was so warm was not the work space Maria had envisioned but she persevered and continuously worked hard, remembering why she made the trip to America, to make her dream come true. She wanted to reunite with her husband who had left their polish village five years earlier. After taking so many risks in the long months that previously passed, all the hard work and suffering finally payed off. The story does not elaborate on what happened after Maria and Leo reunited but I am confident that together they had a wonderful, successful life. With Maria's hard work and perseverance there was no limit to the things she was capable of accomplishing.

I recommend A Dream Of America by Dee Philips, to those interested in US history. In today's American society mostly everyone's ancestors came from a different country to at one point one of their ancestors went through the same procedure that Maria went through. Past generations of my family all came from Europe. From there, future generations moved to Brazil where they settled and enjoyed life. But in seek of a better education and more opportunities they moved to United States. This story gave me a better understanding of what they had to do in order to fulfill their wishes. Although, they didn't go to Ellis Island on a boat they did go through a similar process.

  84. I read, "The Red Pyramid" By Rick Riordan. This book is an action and adventure book. It is about how two kids named Carter and Sadie go on a huge adventure to many different places around the world and see a lot of crazy things such Egyptian gods and other mythical creatures. Carter and Sadie live separately and only see each other twice a year. But now with there dad being spur in coffin and somehow sucked into the ground, they are now on a mission to save him and also to save theirselves. Along the way Crater and Sadie make many new friends and many new enemies. They must work together and put their differences aside to complete the mission they are setting out to complete. They almost die due to mythical creatures and also learn new things about there family. Such as that there family is a royal family and that Carter and Sadie somehow have some sort of powers. They learn hidden secrets about there family and how this mother really died. In conclusion on thought this was a really good and I recommend that everybody should read it even if action and adventure isn't your favorite genre.

  85. I read the book "Death by Honeymoon" by Jaden Skye. Cindy Blaine is a newly wed bride on her honeymoon with her husband Clint in Barbados. When her husband winds up dead on the beach, Cindy is crushed. She won't expect her loss and was convinced something happened to him. Everyone just thinks she's denying the truth When she finds an envelope containing a photo of a woman and son, she believes something is fishy. The woman's son looked distinguishably like Clint. What else hadn't he told her? This book contains romance, sadness, and mystery. When people start getting hurt, she won't stop looking for answers. She believes she will be the next one to be attacked. With Clint's family breathing down her neck she just wants to prove them wrong. I would recommend this book to someone who wants a fairly quick read. Though this book is a a lot of pages, there aren't many words per page. This book contains mostly mystery that some people would like to read. I would not suggest this book to people who don't enjoy the feeling of curiosity or sadness. This book confuses your mind in a "who did it" way. Personally, I wasn't a huge fan of this book. I'd give it 3 stars out of 5. This is because the mystery happens to fast. Like each chapter there is something new going on that I don't think would be possible to deal with all at once. I think the plot feels rushed, like a summary more than a book. But, I think that there are many people who would like this book

  86. The book I read was the Brady vs Manning, by Gary Myers. This book shows the great detail between the rivalry of probably the two best quarterbacks in the NFL. It describes Brady's miraculous college career on which he was bench throughout at Michigan, then had to compete for the starting job. Manning on the other hand had it easy for him. He was a superstar right out of college and chose to go to Tennessee for college. But Peyton had to live up to his name because of his dad, Archie, who was a NFL quarterback from 1971-1984. Manning came into the 1998 NFL draft as considered the next franchise quarterback. He was picked number one by the colts and went on to play 12 seasons for them leading them to one super bowl win. Brady though is considered one of the greatest underdog stories of all time. Six quarterbacks were picked in front of Tom and eventually he was picked 199th overall in the six round in the 2000 NFL draft by the Patriots. Brady then led the Patriots to six Super Bowls, winning four. Manning has been to four Super Bowls winning two of them. One with the Colts and one with the Broncos. Both quarterbacks have shown their excellence in their careers, proving that they worked hard to strive to be the greatest. I would give this book 5/5 stars because it showed perseverance and how the greatest athletes become who they are today.

  88. My book was ghetto cowboy by Craig Graziano.
I would give it a 4 out of 5 stars.
Cole's on the wrong track. He's been skipping school and hanging out with the wrong crowd. Mom has had it with him. So she packs his things in the car and takes him from Detroit to Philadelphia where his dad lives. The practice of caring for horses in the city emerged a couple decades back in some of Philly's neighborhoods. One way to discourage gang violence was introducing kids and teens to horse care. In the book, Cole's dad Harper runs this entire operation. Cowboy is a funny and emotionally real look at a kid lost in a new culture, with a new parent, and his ability to adapt and grow in the face of change. It doesn't start off easy for the boy though. Cole (named after John Coltrane) soon learns that there is a long and proud tradition of black cowboys in America. He begins to see value in his work when he connects with skittish horse, naming it Boo.Harper's initial attitude toward his son seems to be tough love without the love. He takes his job incredibly seriously, which is partially what led to Cole's mother leaving. The neighborhood Harper lives in is run down, suffering due to gentrification and the construction of a freeway over the buildings. The city owns much of the property, but they don't do anything with it. They haven't picked up trash in weeks. Harper and his posse are the only people trying to maintain the place. Right after a big storm blows through and does some damage, the city government conveniently chooses to inspect and condemn the place. The group hasn't even had the chance to fix or clean anything up. All of the horses are taken away, including Boo.
